Rob Sheppard is a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, composer, and educator currently based in Los Angeles, California. He began playing saxophone at age 10 while living in Tualatin, Oregon, and was instantly hooked. He soon moved and was fortunate enough to spend his formative years in Pleasanton, CA constantly learning from and being challenged by endlessly encouraging teachers and phenomenal peers.
In 2011, Rob was selected for the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Band of America, and subsequently awarded the Willie and Fischetta Smith Endowed Music Scholarship to USC Thornton School of Music where he graduated with a B.M. in Jazz Studies in 2015. In 2012, he formed a quintet that won the Angel City Jazz Young Artists’ Competition, and opened the 2012 Angel City Jazz Festival at LACMA. In 2013-14, Rob was on several episodes of the hit TV series Glee, and has since recorded for several other TV and film projects. He also regularly performs as a pit orchestra musician for musical theater productions around LA, in the Disneyland Band and 5 & Dime in Disney’s California Adventure.
As a performer, Rob has had the opportunity to perform with jazz legends such as Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Benny Green, Chris Potter, Bob Mintzer, Peter Erskine, Ignacio Berroa, Bob Reynolds, Ernie Watts, Taylor Eigsti, Ndugu Chancler, David Sanchez, Katisse Buckingham, and many others.
As a composer, Rob has written works for big band, combo, string quartet, saxophone quartet, jazz chamber ensemble, and other groups. He has been fortunate enough to have guidance in developing his craft from some of the best jazz composers in the world, including Ambrose Akinmusire, Vince Mendoza, and Billy Childs.
As a teacher, Rob has been teaching private lessons since he was 16 and larger classes since he was 18. In 2014, he was honored for his dedication to sharing music with students of south LA with the Thornton Outreach Award. He currently works with Harmony Project and the Neighborhood Music School.
